ERROR (-12): There was a null object requested to playback

This happened to me when I first installed SageTV with both of my tuner cards. After reinstalling SageTV a few times and getting frustrated, it all of a sudden went away on its own. When this error pops up, the software seems to be unable to display video from one or both tv tuners.

I've been using SageTV regularly for a month now and as of last night, I now have this same error message again and only one of my tv tuners is able to display video. Does anyone have an idea on how to clear this error?

What kind of tuner cards do you have?

If no one else has a suggestion, you could enable debug logging and see what tech support has to say.

Thanks for the suggestion about the enable debug logging -- I might try that later tonight.

Odd thing just happened. I had emailed SageTV Support and the first suggestion was to go into the setup and find my two tuner cards and try to preview channels to make sure they both work. It was in this setup menu item that I received this Error (-12) message on my Avermedia tv tuner and have checked it for the last hour and keep getting the same message. I just checked it again and the Avermedia card is now displaying a video preview, but now my ATI tuner card is getting the Error (-12) message....

null object requested to playback

I've installed SageTV and am trying to configure it.
I get this exact error with either of my two tuners,
both of which are USB tuners. One is the Hauppage USB2 PVR
and the other is a KWorld ATSC 310U.

I don't see what I can do to get SageTV to work. These
tuners work fine with two other video software tools.

Has anyone figured out what causes this? I just got this error message for the first time. I have changed a few settings, but the preview in channel setup has been working fine after I changed things. I am noticing that I get no sound on the digital tuner, but sound works fine on the analog tuner.

Fixed mine with firmware upgrade

I was trying to setup channels when I got the ERROR (-12) message. I upgraded the firmware for my tuner (SiliconDust HDHomeRun) and the messages went away.

Probably won't help anyone without this tuner, but I hope it will.

I am getting this same error when trying to scan channels as I configure my new SageTV installation. I am using a Hauppauge WinTV-HVR 1600 that I got as part of a bundle from sageTV. I have installed the drivers and WinTV that came with the card works fine with WinTV. Strangely SageTV sees the card as a Hauppauge WinTV-418 TS...I'm not sure why, or if this is part of the problem.

Any help would be appreciated.

I exited SageTV, then opened it again and continued the wizard. I was able to get the channel scan completed without the error and complete the wizard, however now I get: sage.PlaybackException: ERROR (-4,0x80040217):There was a problem rendering the video portion of the content for playback whenever I try to watch live tv regardless of channel. Also disapointing is most of my channels have “No info” for the program guide. I am using local over the air broadcast from Portland OR for my service. Giving up for the night...

Switching from overlay to default setting in SageTV (Settings > Detailed > Video/Audio > Video Render > Default) did the trick.

+1 overlay trick

I was getting the same error and changed the overlay to directx and it fixed the problem for me.
