If you're trying from work they probably haven't opened up port 31099 on the corporate firewall.

And there's no way to change the port that placeshifter uses? Don't really want to go asking for this port to be opened

The end of chapter 7 in the manual (Firewall Settings) has info. If using UPnP, you can configure an external port to be used, which can be different from the actual local internal port number. Some routers allow manual configuration of internal & external ports to be different.

There is also a property you can change that affects the internal port number, so you can do that manually too, but if you change that property, any extenders (MVPs) won't be able to connect.

Thanks Andy... that's a bummer, cuz I have an MVP too. Guess I'll continue to use the Webserver

Just in case you misunderstood, only the change of that internal server port property will prevent an MVP connection. If you assign a different external port on the router to be forwarded to the 31099 port internally, then the MVP will still work & the Placeshifter can connect via the diff external port.

Okay, now I'm confused

Let's say I got to a restaurant that has wireless access. What if their wireless access has a firewall? What is the chances of that? Second, what is the likelihood that port 31099 won't be open? Third, even if I could configure port 31099 to be something else, how would I know what port that particular restaurant would allow? Finally, is using webserver the only workaround this issue?

TIA.

If you configure your router to use a common port, such as port 80, as long as your ISP doesn't block it, the chances of any external firewall blocking that port would be slim.

Now, the assumption would be that most 'normal' firewalls that you come across, such as a restaurant, hotel, or friend, would be pretty much open outbound, with limited blocking at all. Corporate firewalls are locked down pretty tight, with only needed ports open.

I agree with the previous post, most home router firewalls stop incoming initialted traffic on ports, so you should in theory be able to use it as your traffic is internally initiated and going outwards, unless they have really tied it down to say just port 80, but then you wouldn't be able to receive or send emails, unless they open those ports too, 25 ,110 etc.

I've just been staying in a lovely hotel with wifi and placeshifter worked great

Got that... took a while to register, but now I know what I need to do...

Anyone know of a way to test what ports may be opened other than trial and error?

Here is a website that will test the port that you specify.

http://www.canyouseeme.org/

You have to have the router set up and the service running on your system before you check. It won't tell you if a port is open until there is something on your system listening that port and responding. So, if you are testing port 31099, you need to have the router set to forward 31099 to your Sage server and it listening on 31099.

Hamachi eliminates the need to do port forwarding. If you are going to access your Sage server for Placeshsifter from the same outside computer all the time, then just load Hamchi on both compuetrs. Now start Hamachi on both computers. Then point the PS to the new IP address (5.xx.xx.xx) and Voila .. you have Placeshifter receiving the stream from your Sage server.

No using dyns or no-ip. No port forwarding, no security issues. Works great!

P.S. I also access the Sage webserver the same way 5.xx.xxx.xx:8080/sage/home

Just a quick note to add to this, with Hamachi you don't have to open any ports, since Hamachi can do firewall traversal. Also keep in mind that all traffic across a Hamachi connection is encrypted with AES-256. Very handy for people wishing to use PlaceShifter at work
