Yes. There have NEVER been any C++(which I've coded in as well as C) bugs, especially in the realm of porting. I personally wouldn't lecture you. I have no problem with potential competition hobbling themselves if we are competing in the same space.

I write java applications, server side, for a living and I've had nothing but an excellent experience. Certainly better than my C/C++ days.

The JVM is, of course, a C/C++ application...

Yes. So is my operating system. So what? No one said that you shouldn't use C/C++. For drivers, firmware, OSes, games, many apps, C++ is an excellent choice.

Java is an excellent choice for other types of applications, especially server-side applications where I live.

If I want to write an OS or JVM, C/C++ is the obvious choice. If I want to write vertical, server-based applications where portability, integration, performance, maintainability, and extensibility are my primary concerns, I'll take Java every time. I only hope potential competitors pick C.

jominor, I was chiming in on your side. This thread has become about bugs in the JVM - which are probably not Java bugs.

I'm a server side Java programmer, and I'm now going client side because at last Java is mature enough to make it easy & responsive enough with SWT, JFace and the Eclipse RCP. And I may try my hand at games programming now that the LWJGL is there.

I might one day learn C#, but there's no way I'm going to C/C++ - be like throwing the dishwasher and the washing machine away and doing everything by hand because you can be more thorough that way.

I certainly find c#, .net and their associated toolsets much easier to work with than Java. Did a couple of Java projects last year and found the development environments a bit of a drag. Language was easy enough to pick up as C# borrowed alot from java.

ToxMox,

Java thing was no go, broke again predictably. 1-2 day timeframe as i said before. the java updater is disabled per our conversation as well, so that couldnt have been the cause.

Not to hijack , but I'm also very excited about the Java 6 beta client features. They really seem to be pursuing the client, especially Vista hard.

Now, back to your regular Sage post!

Shrug. I didn't care for the .Net toolkits personally, but different strokes!

Did you ever check your Java Version?

Did you ever check your Java version? You can check it in the control panel's add/remove programs. I tried using Java 1.5.x and had a lot of problems and went back to Java version 1.4.2_06.

I also had a lot of problems with the USB-UIRT when I was first setting up SageTV several years ago. Some tweaking with the IR file was necessary to get it to function with a Dish Network JVC-301 receiver. More tweaking was needed with the IR file when I switched to Comcast cable TV using a Motorola DCT2000 cable box.

I did not see what type of satellite or cable box that you were using in the thread. Perhaps you need to get an IR file from someone with a similar satellite or cable box.

Have you tried backing up your current sage directory and do a fresh installation of the latest release just to see if Sage recognizes your UIRT?
Something maybe have gotten corrupted. It sucks but I have had to do that on one or more occassion. On the plus side, rebuilding your customized Sage setup can make it more stable. I know in the past I was trying different STV's every day until I was happy with all the imports I implemented. My need to experiment is pretty much over with and I have my installation/imports down to a science. You may have to start from scratch to fix your problem if you haven't done so yet.

Java fixed it for me

Hey guys,

I've had the USB UIRT working on my system for over a year. In the past week, I had tried to upgrade to SageTV 6 unsuccessfully (first time this has ever happened). At the same time, I must have clicked on the Java Update nag. Got chasing my tail thinking that I broke the USB UIRT with the v6 upgrade of Sage. Anyhow, after reading these posts, I uninstalled Java 5, and reinstalled 1.4 as recommended and the USB UIRT is working again.

Thanks!!!

I believe this was the last Version 5.

You can take the above URL and plug in any of those version numbers and get any version of sage, as far as I can tell. EG

I'm very glad to see this post pop up. I recently upgraded to the latest Sage beta, and being a little out of practice I went against my better judgement and installed a java update at the same time.

Now my USB-IRT is going haywire, after being rock solid for well over a year. About every 5 or so channel changes, it sends several extra digits - usually 2's, 3's and 0's.

The beta team wasn't exactly helpful, all they said was to downgrade to the previous version.

I am going try an older version of Java tonight.
It all makes perfect sense now, thanks again Sage Community.
