dumb question: remote desktop
I hid my sage server in a closet in the basement and I only use a remote control to drive a TV in the living room.
I don't use it as a computer often and when I do I would like to connect to it through windows remote desktop. The problem is that when I use remote desktop, the thing locks the screen so if I want to watch TV again I need to go downstairs, fish the keyboard out of the closet and unlock it. If I have to do that each time, I might as well not use remote desktop. Does anyone knows if I can disable that security feature in XP pro ? thanks Gog |

Use something like RealVNC (www.realvnc.com), since it takes direct control of the computer, instead of "logging on" again.

I'm familiar with a few of the VNC flavors but I can't say I like them. I have to use it at work and it often causes problems. It's much slower than remote desktop (ok, I'm on a LAN I don't really care) and it can eat up CPU cycles like crazy. Not something I want on my sage server...

What happens if you create a second user and only use that other user for remote desktop?
Another thing to try but I don't know if it still works like this but if you get TweakUI and setup XP to auto login your user when you close your RDP connection it used to auto log back in at the local station. |

There was a way to do this in Windows during one of the service pack betas (I think). Anyhow, if you search around the web, you should be able to find a place where you can get that version of the DLL. Replace your existing one with that, and you can have someone remote desktop'ed in and someone logged into the "real" window at the same time.

After using remote desktop (should say when I want to exit) I run this in a batch file and it eliminates the need to to log in:
tscon.exe 0 /dest:console |

I've also seen some mention of a way to allow multiple logins with WinXP pro. The reason this is happening is because XP Pro by default only allows 1 user to access the system at a time, even if the remote user is the same as the local user it's still considered 2 users accessing it at the same time which again by default is not possible.

Terminal Server patch Make sure you have XP Pro SP2 and fast user switching is enabled and your computer is NOT in a domain. Gerry
