So, say you have one placeshifter license installed on your server. You can install placeshifter on as many machines as you want, but only one machine can connect to your server at any given time.

So, it sounds like you don't even have to use Placeshifter on a USB stick to do what you want to do.
Thanks
It appears you would be right now that I understand it more. Maybe that is why the thread is old...

I carry Placeshifter on my USB key "just in case"... LOL

Sometimes if I am out and about, at a friend's house, etc and I'm explaining exactly what SageTV is and how to create a REAL PVR, I'll pull out the key and connect to my server from their house, show them around and then hope that I get some sort of finder's fee from Sage!

I don't really use the copy on my key that much, but it's always nice to have around.

Why not just install Placeshifter on the laptops or are they corporate laptaps and you are verboten from installing any software?

That makes it quicker but PS is a free download so even if you don't have the key you can just install from the Sage website. All you need is your locator ID which I keep on my Blackberry which never leaves my side. Even better would be to have a PS client that runs on the Blackberry.

It would be really nice if there was a java applet version of the Placeshifter. I thought they demoed one years ago at CES (I could be wrong), but nothing came from it.

Personally, I think its easier/more convenient to set up a dyndns account and use that. I certainly won't remember my locator ID off the top of my head, but I can remember my dyndns URL.

The advantages of having it on a thumbdrive is that you can have your locator ID already set up on it. You also don't need to have install rights to run it. Both very important for a lot of people.
