I do agree that the overlay seems to be slightly softer. I don't know if that's better or worse though -- just different. I'd rather have a softer picture than a stutter, so I'll wait to hear shouts of joy from you pioneers, before I switch back! B-)

The problem with Overlay is that it doesn't accurately reproduce color & luminance levels like VMR9 does. Take another look at the difference when you switch and look at black levels and color. You'll notice that shadows tend to go black much quicker on overlay, while in VMR9 you'll still see detail in the shadows.
Stanger has explained the differences on this forum before so I won't repeat it all, and there's also a an explanation on the difference on the AVS forum in reference to image calibration. |

So I feel like an idiot now. Apparently my HD signal quality is pretty bad, even though the strength is high. This could be attributed to my powered antenna, which seems to be amplifying the signal even though the knob is turned completely to zero, but with power still being applied to the antenna. I took a close look at Avermedia's program for channels which were playing "badly" in Sage, and noticed that Avermedia would slowly lose sync, and then drop a whole bunch of audio frames to match the video (video would playback slower than audio).
So yeah, it has the same problem as sage; just that it manifests itself differently. D'oh! Last edited by kltye; 03-10-2006 at 11:38 AM. |

I have the same problem. When I watch HDTV with a the VMR9 i get a beautiful picture the jitters, especially in fast action such as sports. Switch to overlay and i get a very smooth picture.
Unfortunatly, the overlay doesn't work when I try to run two displays of the same card, only VMR9 seems to work. Any halp? Is anyone able to view HDTV smoothly with VMR9? |

I can't answer for him, but Full Screen Exclusive makes no difference for me.

Just got HD up and running this weekend - my client box with an ATI 800x in it plays the HD content back on my projector smooth as silk. Perhaps not suprisingly the client running a fanless Nvidia 6200 is very choppy indeed! Overlay and FSE settings make a big difference but regardless of the settings it's still choppy during playback. Going to have to pony up for a 6600 fanless in there I guess.
On the ATI, FSE didn't seem to make any difference and VMR9 worked fine and looks a bit better than Overlay. Although I must say that I notice the picture difference between VMR9 vs. Overlay more on SD content than HD, but perhaps that's just me...

Yea, the difference is more for me here too as well on SD material for VMR9 vs overlay.
