recordings timelines' get messed up

I may have found something of interest for those of us having this probelm.

I can duplicate the timeline corruption problem by having a high CPU activity on my machine when a recording is in progress (before and during the recording).

When my system is idle, I do NOT get the timeline corruptions on my recordings.

Also, when SA is running even at low CPU activity (say 15%), my system reports a high amount of DPC usage (Deferred Procedure Calls) like 70%.

It says: "If any kernel-mode device driver in your Windows system is implemented improperly and causes excessive latencies of Deferred Procedure Calls (DPCs) then probably drop-outs will occur when you use real-time audio or video streaming applications."

Things sure make a lot of sense now.

By the way, if you dont have it, download this Windows Process Explorer:

It will show you the DPC usage amoung many other useful things running on your system.

I used to have this problem all the time, but haven't seen it since adding the registry entries

[HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\hcwPP2\DriverData]
"HcwTimeStampIssue1"=dword:00000001
"HcwTimeStampIssue2"=dword:00000000

and updating my drivers to 20.43_24108 from here

I did install those Reg Key entries, but have not updated the drivers, so I will do that tonight.

Just to make sure I get the right ones, that link says 64bit. I have Win Xp running in 32bit mode. Will that work? Also, are those beta drivers?

Hauppauge seems to have updated drivers on their support page, dated 1/15/07 (no old style version number though, now it's "2.7")

Did you notice any increase in CPU utilization after installing these Registry entries?

My CPU went from 2-3% when recording a show to 20-25%. Also, playback on the local PC is not smooth anymore (kind of go/quick stop/go). I am not sure if the CPU increase was due to the reg entry or something else I may have done.

No change for me. Normally sits around 2% while recording if it's not doing anything else. Playback is fine too.

I'm using the 24108 driver. I don't know if the registry entries are required or cause a problem on any of the later drivers. I didn't know any later drivers existed until flachbar mention it. The 24108 drivers I linked to above are for both 32 and 64 bit. The version on the CD 2.7 is 24227. Version 24258 is available over at shspvr.com.
