Make a backup copy of sage.properties before editing it.
Exit SageTV completely; don't just put it to sleep. If you edit the properties file while it is running, your changes will be ignored. Run Notepad, then drag sage.properties to that window. In Notepad, make sure that Format -> Word Wrap is NOT checked. You can then edit the file. If the EPG data never updates, you can also try contacting SageTV tech support to see what they suggest. - Andy
