I also happened to have on hand a ATI Rage 128 Pro card which appears to have the holes for the internal digital video input as well. So, what I would like to do is to have the pin header soldered on to both of these cards and order the 26 pin cable as seen earlier on in this thread. I suspect I'll have to take this to a PC repair shop and have someone do this work for me. (See the attached image)

My questions are: Can the pin header actually be soldered on in the first place? Looking at the ATI board, is this the correct header? (upper left corner) Are the pinouts the same or will I have to mod the cable wiring? What am I overlooking? Has anyone ever done this?

I did try out the xcard and I'm impressed with its smooth video... but, of course, there is no sage UI.

Thanks for your comments.. BryanJ
BryanJ you can soldered the pin header back on the Xcard nothing missing unless they made some last min change by not add all caps or small parts but as for the ATI well that I don't know there maybe some miss parts that could keep it from work but you could alway try.

for anyone who has connected their xcard to their video card via VIP, how does the passed through output from the video card compare to using s-vid right out of the xcard? does the image quality degrade at all? if so, is it because we're restricted to older video cards with poor s-vid out or is it because of the process itself?

BryanJ, i'm interested to see how your project turns out too. if soldering on a connector works, it makes me wonder if modern cards like a 6800gt might have those holes too. then i suppose you could use DVI maybe?

can you also play xvid using sage & the xcard this way?

thanks! this is the most interesting thread i've come across in a while

well, i've found a few 6800GTs that claim to include "VIP 1.1 interface support for video-in function" but the pictures don't seem to confirm that it's on the card. can anyone clear that up for me?

I'm using Xcard with VIP header with Asus V8200 connected to SDTV via s-vid.
I cannot see any difference in picture quality between s-vid and Xcard output.
Xvid playback is no problem at all.
Vip on G6800 would be attractive for DVI connection.

Well, I'm closer to getting this VIP setup to work, but currently, I'm stumped... I've got the pins soldered on the xcard and have picked up a ASUS V8200 deluxe GEforce 3 with the vip header... Got it hooked up and the UI is there but the video is blank and dark green.. I'm using the nvidia 40.72 drivers and I've got the rmvpe32.dll file in place (in system32 folder) too. What am I missing? Anyone, Any ideas? SHS what do you think? Thanks!! BryanJ

SHS.. Actually, my cable was not configured pin 1 to pin1.. but after reconfiguring, still no success.. and although I've got the passthru cable hooked up, I don't see why it would be required since the combined MPEG video/UI is coming straight from the video card to the monitor or TV.

Willemse... Yes, I've got the xcard drivers & the xmedia player installed.. In the xmedia player configuration for video I've selected svideo/composite output & NTSC for TV..

About the rmvpe32.dll file.. does it need to be entered in the windows registry? and do the xcard drivers and this dll file need to be from the exact same driver version release?

My problem may be with the soldred on pin header..

Thanks for the suggestions!! Appreciate the Help! BryanJ

rmvpe32.dll is automatic registry load being you get Windows mode screen it try to work.

Yeah, SHS, That's where I ordered my cable from - pccables.com.. I found out that in order to go pin 1 to pin 1, I had to modify the cable.. (see attached pic)... still, it does not work.. Pin 1 on the Xcard is upper, left one (with the arrow) right? I may have to find an xcard with the factory installed VIP.. Thanks, Bryan J.

That ATI AMC cable made for older ATI 40 Pin Video card
Thing is you may need flip or twist pin1 to go to pin25/26
You should gotting reg IDC-26 on both end
Have look at this screenshot

SHS, This cable is one this I modified myself.. (I added the 40 pin connectors).. I put the twisted end on the end because I assumed pin 1 on the xcard is on the top left (with the arrow indicator) You indicate to use the other connector which would have pin 1 in the bottom left.. I think you're right because, connected to the other, the video card does not even function.. thanks for your help so far.. I'm bound and determined to make this thing work..

Nom the cable should look like this
Pin1 should alway line up Pin1 even with if both IDC-26 facing that same way the only diff is you back roll the cable like showing in this screenshot
But some the dran Pin is in rev
Like
Top
1 3 5 etc etc
2 4 6 etc etc
bottom
So some wist and roll in order to line up
